June's stitched moments and memories for Scroll of the Year. This is June Scroll of The Year. Head over to my blog for the story behind June's images. This one is the wood pigeon. Hand printed and embroidered patches ready for June Scroll of the Year. I'll be appliquéing them to a collaged background a bit different to previous months, which I'm looking forward to sharing with you. I always find the offcuts and leftovers from a project really interesting and save them to play with. This was the result of a recent session, playing with shape, balance and connection. I do believe another project (how many is too many!) is born. I am calling it 'Leftovers', where I will use up said offcuts, scraps, threads etc to create something new, with no rules - 'anything goes' I wrote in my note book. I often need to remind myself to let go so this is ideal. Watercolour + mark making = joy! These cards just like the last ones I posted, are destined for a new art journal. You may recognise the botanicals in this project as adaptations of both my 'Bloom' and 'Meadow' stick and stitch designs. I'm thinking of new ways to make them available as templates that can be used in all sorts of projects. Please do let me know if this is something you would be interested in. Thanks! This has been one of the stops along my work evolution path. I see the whole process as a sort of snow plough, gathering skills, techniques and ideas along the way, which all combine to produce something that looks and feels like a reflection of me. This is where 'Shapes' (see yesterday's post) led me. I've used the same process, collaging vintage sewing patterns, sheet music, postcards etc to card, adding a felt flower instead and then some embroidered detail. I followed the thread back to botanicals, which feels right. I'll show you more soon! If an idea pops into your head enough times, I find it's a good idea to follow the thread and see where it leads. 'Shapes' kept popping into my head so I took them out and created them. The background is either plain recycled card or consists of collaged vintage papers and imagery (postcards, sewing patterns, botanical illustrations etc) on card, with felt or hand printed fabric shapes stuck on top. Finally embroidery is added, using traditional stitches in new ways. Poking holes in the card before stitching is so satisfying! Follow the thread loves, it might just lead to new and interesting places. Evolution is the key! It took me a little while but May #scrolloftheyear is complete and the story behind the images I have stitched is up on my blog. Highlights of May were the roses in my garden and my girl coming back from Uni after completing her studies.
