I too remember dancing on my Dad’s feet but hadn’t thought about it for years! I feel sad that I’ve been so blind to the lack of diverse representation throughout my life, it simply hasn’t affected me so I’ve been unaware which speaks everything of my privilege. I think I do understand how it would make you feel though, and like you I truly hope that the energy we felt this year will maintain its momentum and lead to genuine and lasting changes in our society. Your Queens are just beautiful. Xx
Hello Vanessa, thank you so much for reading and for your comment and compliments! Thank you too for hoping with me lovely. Take care, lots of love, Lucy xxxxxx
This is a lovely pattern, Lucy, and I’m having trouble deciding which of the two versions I prefer. I’m leaning toward the one with the darker skin and the golden flowered afro. Of course this is strictly an old, fat, white woman’s opinion… but I think afros look great. They were very popular amongst the Black kids I went to school with as a teenager. (think of the 1970s!)
I love love love your Summer Queen design, she is magnificent.
Your story about the search for representative cards really resonates with me. A family friend surprised us the day before our wedding with a second wedding cake. Lovely, except the little white plastic couple on the top! We borrowed a neighbour’s airfix model paints to give the groom a last minute makeover. I don’t know if they noticed on the day, I guess they must have. We keep the plastic couple, I find them both funny and a little bit sad.
Then about 10 years later the airfix paints came out again when our middle lad had a table football game for Christmas, I just couldn’t give him a table with 22 white blonde players :-/
Oh lovely, I am both pleased and sad that this resonates with you. I am sending you a virtual hug of love and understanding and sending huge love to you and your family. Thank you for loving Summer Queen and thank you for your lovely comment and for sharing your experiences with me. I hear you. Love and warmth always, Lucy xxxxxx
Oh my lovely, we shall, hand in hand. I treasure our friendship and sisterhood so much. It fills me up and makes my heart swell. Love, love, love always and forever, Lucy xxxxxxx
What a wonderful thing to say! Thank you! I am so pleased my words took you there. I found it such a cathartic process to write this story. Lots of love, Lucy xxxxx
What a lovely and poignant tale, Lucy. I really enjoyed it! I think your new pattern is beautiful, too. I particularly like the gradations you’ve used in coloring the leaves.
What a beautiful Queen, and such a strong and meaningful message. Your words always hit home – I wish everyone, everywhere, could read them! We all need to listen.
Sending much love x
I’m very sorry to learn of what’s been going on in your life this year. What a challenging time! This is a beautiful new design you’ve created and I hope it is well-received, however you might market it. As you venture a little deeper into the water of your new life, I will say a few prayers for you. May you experience peace and healing.
I literally had just finished my daily self-compassion meditation before reading this! Thinking of you Lu, and wishing you strength, healing and resilience xx
