Scroll of the Year is a visual, textile diary or journal of moments and memories. Month by month I am documenting in fabric and thread small and simple joys, my feelings, dreams and hopes. From my heart and mind, to my sketch book and then to fabric, each image holds significance however small, in my day, life and world. This is January. Head over to my blog for the gallery of stills, with a few details of the story behind each image I have hand stitched with love. This is the third project I am working on - another fabric book, but with larger pages (see yesterday's post). If you've been following me for a while, you may recognise the kingfisher, who keeps popping up in my work. His creation was originally inspired by sightings of a kingfisher one summer whilst swimming in the ladies pond on Hampstead Heath. The floral design is inspired by vintage sanderson fabric, snippets of which you can see collaged here. The style of my work and the processes I use have evolved over the years and I seem to have arrived somewhere that feels like home. I am typically drawn to a combination of fabric collage and embroidery and I am inspired by nature and the simple joys in life. Although it's tempting and less anxiety inducing to continue stitching behind the scenes, I feel that it is time to find a way forward and to start slowly sharing my work and parts of my life with you again. I have been here, struggling to stay afloat amidst some traumatic stuff happening in my life. All along, I have kept hoping, dreaming and stitching and I have learnt some valuable lessons. One such lesson is that no one can take my creativity from me. It is a driving, core, vital force in my life that I know is my path to thriving rather than just surviving. It is the expression of self that keeps me going. It is my voice reflected in fabric and thread. It is my own validation. It is my joy and delight. It is my peace. You can find all of these lovely things in my shop now - patchwork necklaces, pouches and needle books. Link in bio. Each one is unique as they're made from patchwork leftovers and there's a limited number. Thank you! 💕 Patchwork necklaces made from the 'mini patchworks of joy'. I'm really pleased with how these have turned out. There'll be some available in tomorrow's update - Friday 23rd May at 8.30am BST. This is the front of the experimental collage and embroidery piece I showed you the back of a few posts ago. You can see the collaged strips, the canvas for the embroidery, which will be revealed in full once the self-adhesive stabiliser has been soaked off. I'll then decide how to finish and present it. At the moment, I'm thinking stitch mounting on card, but we'll see! 5 patchwork needle books, available this Friday, made from patchwork offcuts, lined with 100% wool felt, with hand finished binding and inside pockets, including a zipper pocket to hold a small pair of scissors. And of course, made with lots of love and care ❤ These pretty patchwork pouches will be available in a shop update this Friday 23rd May. To create them, I've used patchwork leftovers and additional hand printed, vintage, preloved fabrics and remnants. They have a metal zip, are lined with fabric from a vintage curtain and have a layer of interfacing, which gives them a quilted feel. They are a good size (25 x 16cm) so could be used as a project bag, a clutch, a large makeup bag, to hold a kindle, a notebook etc etc!
