Hand printed, collaged and embroidered textile pages for what will be a small fabric book. These were the pages that made something click for me in my work. Cutting up cloth (in this case hand printed by me and my son), building a background to create a collage and then stitching on top in striking black embroidery thread felt and looked right to me somehow. I created the botanicals and shapes on this piece by sketching directly onto the fabric with a heat erasable pen. The results of my experimentation are most often image-rich pieces that hold stories, such as Scroll of the Year. A little flower for the weekend. Stitched using the humble back stitch on remnant fabric and felt. Simple joy. Two more pages from what will be a collaged, slow stitched and embroidered textile book. These feature primroses, my sweet Mum's faves and the shoes I can imagine she wore when primrose picking with her sister as a child. And houses. You'll see these popping up a lot in my work. You can read yesterday's caption to find out why. Another one from January #scrolloftheyear before I get properly stuck into February. Check out yesterday's reel to see my visual journal so far. This image is about a house and the sea. It's been a long time coming but it looks more promising every day that we will be moving soon and the sea is beckoning. I am constantly day dreaming of being by the sea and being free. When the time comes, I'll be partying with the seagulls, whom I'm convinced I can hear calling me home. Scroll of the Year is a visual, textile diary or journal of moments and memories. Month by month I am documenting in fabric and thread small and simple joys, my feelings, dreams and hopes. From my heart and mind, to my sketch book and then to fabric, each image holds significance however small, in my day, life and world. This is January. Head over to my blog for the gallery of stills, with a few details of the story behind each image I have hand stitched with love. This is the third project I am working on - another fabric book, but with larger pages (see yesterday's post). If you've been following me for a while, you may recognise the kingfisher, who keeps popping up in my work. His creation was originally inspired by sightings of a kingfisher one summer whilst swimming in the ladies pond on Hampstead Heath. The floral design is inspired by vintage sanderson fabric, snippets of which you can see collaged here. The style of my work and the processes I use have evolved over the years and I seem to have arrived somewhere that feels like home. I am typically drawn to a combination of fabric collage and embroidery and I am inspired by nature and the simple joys in life. Although it's tempting and less anxiety inducing to continue stitching behind the scenes, I feel that it is time to find a way forward and to start slowly sharing my work and parts of my life with you again. I have been here, struggling to stay afloat amidst some traumatic stuff happening in my life. All along, I have kept hoping, dreaming and stitching and I have learnt some valuable lessons. One such lesson is that no one can take my creativity from me. It is a driving, core, vital force in my life that I know is my path to thriving rather than just surviving. It is the expression of self that keeps me going. It is my voice reflected in fabric and thread. It is my own validation. It is my joy and delight. It is my peace. You can find all of these lovely things in my shop now - patchwork necklaces, pouches and needle books. Link in bio. Each one is unique as they're made from patchwork leftovers and there's a limited number. Thank you! 💕
